Diabetes is a worldwide problem. Type 1 diabetes can strike anyone, anywhere, and Type 2 diabetes is increasing dramatically in the Western world. The rise in Type 2 diabetes is linked to the Western diet of high fat, high sugar processed foods and the Western lifestyle of sedentary work and leisure. For this reason, a diabetes foundation of some kind or another can be found around the world.
One diabetes organisation that has a particular focus on diabetes in developing nations is the Word Diabetes Foundation. The World Diabetes Foundation has the aim of preventing, detecting and treating diabetes in developing nations by providing improved medical care and education on good nutrition.
Projects recently completed by the World Diabetes Foundation include a scheme to supply insulin to Mozambique, the founding of a Diabetes Centre in Bolivia and running a program of diabetes prevention and education in Nepal. Ongoing projects that are funded and/or organised by the World Diabetes Foundation include improved access to diabetic care in Tanzania, training diabetes educators in Cambodia and Vietnam, and setting up a school-based intervention program in the Caribbean
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has the aim of finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes (also known as juvenile onset diabetes). Type 1 diabetes differs from Type 2 diabetes in that it is an autoimmune disease where the insulin-producing beta-cells in the pancreas are attacked by antibodies rather than the pancreas “going on strike” after being overworked by poor diet over a lengthy period. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the largest organisation that funds research into Type 1 diabetes.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was founded in 1970 and currently has operations in 20 countries. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation also funds many research projects including research into creating an artificial pancreas, beta-cell regeneration, stem cell therapy, searching for genetic factors that may trigger Type 1 diabetes, and research into preventing, predicting and reversing the complications that occur when diabetes is poorly managed.
The Diabetes Foundation Inc is an organisation located in the USA that is a part of the umbrella organisation, the American Diabetes Association. The Diabetes Foundation Inc has a focus on local communities, in particular the State of New Jersey.
The Defeat Diabetes Foundation is another diabetes foundation located in the USA. The Defeat Diabetes Foundation has the aim of raising public awareness of diabetes and the potential complications that can occur if the condition is not managed. One program run by the Defeat Diabetes Foundation is the “Mr Diabetes Wake up and Walk” scheme which has the aim of publicising the condition.
Nearly every country in the Western world has access to a diabetes foundation that offers support, and education on the condition. And with the number of people being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes increasing every day – and families around the world being stunned by having Type 1 diabetes strike “out of the blue” – this support is increasingly necessary.
